PostSubject: Now my mare won't play ball...   Sun Jun 26, 2011 1:04 am

Okay so I got this once brood mare to re-train her for endurance etc. After I got her she appeared to be in season for two solid years and as bad tempered as anything. (Actually Moody Mare did help.) Now that I can't ride her and after a lot of debate, we have decided to put her into foal. We have chosen the stallion, had the vet round for swabs and the breeder says now we wait until she's willing. Well... she ain't willing!!!! They have a teaser close by (a former stallion who doesn't mind being teased) and I take her up there every other day or so to look for the obvious signs, but the whole of the month (and I think last month too) she's been as sweet as sweet can be - not one bad mood - no sign whatsoever of a season. Huh! Doesn't she want another sweet little foal? She can keep this one. Any ideas anyone - am I missing a sign?

Maybe she just doesn't fancy the teaser? Or perhaps she can sense that he's a "former stallion" (I take it that means he's been gelded?) and he's no longer able to perform.

Thinking laterally, if she's being as sweet as can be, why not have another go at her re-training?

Bill.

Hi Rona, several of my friends back in uk have had "problems" of one sort or another with their mares, certainly this year, including "riggy" behaviour Shocked but I would say mainly coming into season and staying in Rolling Eyes most have been seen by the vet and nothing found scratch regumate(if thats spelt wrong I'm sorry) has been recommended, to a few. I'm inclined to think it may well have something to do with the extraordinary weather we've had this year, maybe even the change in seasons in general, I think animals are much more "in tune" than us Smile
Otherwise, yes, "maybe she just don't fancy him" Wink

Interesting Pen because she is the mare I posted about a little while ago because she started to produce milk and seemed to have a phantom pregnancy. The milk's all dried up now but perhaps she thinks she's been there and done that and needs a break from being pregnant! Will keep trying. (Actually there's a real stallion in the next field she fancies like mad but the fence is not very strong!!).

Love to get her back into work Bill and her temperament was not the issue. She has chronic laminitus and ossification of the cartilege in her feet and I can't ride her at the moment and have not been able to for nearly a year. She will need quite a lot of management when she's pregnant to keep her weight down but the vet sees no problem.

Ah, right, i misunderstood your earlier post. Poor girl, no wonder she's grumpy if her feet are playing her up. Good luck with getting her in the family way and managing her health issues.

Bill x

P.S. What about several large Malibu and Cokes. That seems to get some "ladies" in the mood for I love you I love you I love you Laughing

i have heard of mares who will only accept the stallion they want & no other.

maybe she is just fussy?

some mares prefer to be courted the natural way - running loose, i know it is not possible with a lot of stallions, they are not brought up that way & some are too valuable to risk a lady kicking out when they just don't get the 'NO THANKS' messages.

good luck, she sounds an 'interesting' lady to know, bye [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
