PostSubject: Skin infection around eyes   Skin infection around eyes EmptyThu Apr 08, 2010 3:40 am

Little Volcane is our new addition, he's been with us for nearly two
weeks now after getting tangled up in the barbed wire at the dealers
place!!
He has a scabby skin around his eyes, does anyone know what it is?

Firstly WELL DONE for getting him home [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] He's a really nice pony , has he had lice Jann ? just wandering if she's been scratching and made himself scabby ? a gentle wash and some sudacrem will probably help from the outside and vitamins / oils + wormer from the inside , my guess is you've already done those things but just thinking out loud
It doesn't look much like ringworm to me unless he has other patches somewhere

He doesn't have discharge Pen, a few scabs along his mane
but no hair loss anywhere else, couldn't find any lice, he's had a gentle wormer 2 weeks ago
then another stronger one in a week, he's quite weak so I suppose he'll catch
anything, I'll give him a wash and try some sudacrem, we've got some vits for him
but I didn't want to 'over do' it, he's on foalie food as he's only 10 months old
By oils do you mean like soya oil?
thanks for answering, my vets not very good for skin things

I should keep him separate from the others until you find out for sure [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I think you can use oils such as olive oil etc ( perhaps a google on horses and oils will help ) although I've got a tub of linseed oil ( already boiled ) that I use

It's a form of ring worm, had it here 2 years ago, 3/4 of my stock caught it.

I just use vegetable oil Very Happy a thought on sudacrem, it does have lots of uses as a barrier cream, however it is very "drying" if you think what it is primarily used for.... dryingout the skin on "nappy rash" bottoms, try it on your own skin for 4-5 days and see [not necessarily your bottom] Skin infection around eyes 42662 I think good old fashioned vaseline is a far better moisturiser.

Don't use vaseline on inflamed skin very close around the eyes, if it melts with skin heat & runs into the eye it hurts like hell - but it's fine for a show shine on healthy skin.

olive oil is far less irritating.

as to what is it? even if your vet is crap with skin he should be able to rule out all obvious candidates, from what you say it could be fungal or just excema maybe(never can spell that right!) but i would agree with keeping him & his bucket etc separate until you know for sure.

poor baby, glad he stands a chance now, bye [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

He's in with a little pony called Tania and she has nothing for the minute, the others are separate as
he was dominated by them all, I'm going for my grandmas advice, camomile infusions
to wash and then lavender oil, If no better in a couple of days I'll get a different vet out
anyone tried the one in Lozon?

Well cally's right, it's lice [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] looks like they've all got
them, I have still called for the vet though as he has a
cough, no runny nose or nothing but to be on the safe side..
considering where he's come from

this last winter was a dead cert for lice, long wet and cold so the horses all grew yeti coats, harder to keep them clean then with a sudden warm up, ideal!

so easy to catch when a horse has had a rough time, my old trotter has got 'visitors' too, she has to have the lotion on, but she does not have the scabby eyes.

all i can say is good hunting, bye [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Seems the whole dealer is full from what the
girls on the French forum have told me, he didn't need this poor thing
after the barbed wire, tetanos jab, cleaning him every day, worms, skinny
and he was supposed to have been in a 'safe haven' I haven't seen him trot
yet poor thing

young horses like kids bounce back better than we often think they will.

i had a TB filly of 9 months, bought at auction, she had red worm, lice, serious malnutrition causing spinal deformity, lame on 3 legs with injuries caused by being attacked probably by another horse and septic cuts all over her.

& this filly was from the queen mothers racing stud line! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] her father was a hunter improvement stallion with a great racing history, her uncle won the grand national, a cousin was an olympic eventer.

just goes to show.... not only crap dealers can land a horse in sh*t.

she was 1 of the nicest horses i have ever owned, she had 1 hell of a jump too, but arthritis ended her chances, she bred 3 fantastic foals and died of colic at 18y.

your baby has a long way to go, but at least its all going up from now on.

P.S when you say he was in a 'safe' place.... it was not somewhere in dept 53 near a well known meat farm was it?

bye [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

He's from the 79 department, Ella (my daughter ) and littlesaltire on this forum
went to get him, I rented a little lorry, (was sick with worry of course)
I was supposed to get two but the other appaloosa is wild, so I'm still
trying to get her up, I'd just rather she came in a bigger lorry [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
It's just awful to think of her still there, plus she's in foal, he has horses
for his own consomation, one in the field and one in the freezer
plus his brother is a horse butcher
Talking about good horses at the dealers I have Royal Harvest, her Dad is Royal
Applause, the Queens stud, I put her picture in favourite pics, she was in a bad way when she came
!! I'd love to see pics of your horse
