Insurance and help!!! Empty
PostSubject: Insurance and help!!!   Insurance and help!!! EmptyWed Feb 24, 2010 2:49 am

Hopefully I am using the correct forum.
Firstly do you have to have insurance cover to ride or lead horses on roads,if so where do you obtain it?
Secondly I have no experience at all with using synthetic saddles, as I shall be riding only occasionally is this a cheaper alternative to buying an expensive saddle?
Thirdly I have a bridle but no bit where is the best place to buy one can you buy them via the internet or shopping by post? I live near Avranche so I suppose Decathlon would be a good choice?
Sorry to appear so naive but as mentioned in another forum I am hopefully returning to riding after a long lay off!!!
Thanks in advance Fran

re the sythetic saddle I've got one for Mandoline , good value from decathlon , they seem nice and light and Mandoline seems happy enough , she would soon give a good buck if she didn't like it

Hi Fran,
Re. insurance, another alternative is to speak to your ins. company. I would think you probably have house/land insurance in which case your horses should be included on that. With my company AXA I took in all their passports, which they photo copied, it's all for public liability really, incase the horses get out and cause an accident, or injure someone when they are on your land, however, if you tell them that you are going to be riding out they will just write that in. As with everything in France, it will very much depend on who you talk to on the day, but whatever, it will not be expensive, ie. I pay 60 euro per year for 6 horses.
Far more interesting, tack! there's nothing wrong with a synthetic saddle, as cally said they are lightweight easy to keep clean etc. and have vastly improved over the last 10years or so, far better a synthetic saddle that fits than a super-duper, all singing , all dancing leather one, that does'nt. I personally would'nt go for a synthetic bridle. You can pick up cheap bridles, as you say Decathlon and Agrial sell them, but you do get what you pay for, they are normally buffalo or indian leather....nothing a pint of neatsfoot won't put right[ish] Rolling Eyes How about putting an ad on Tack Wanted ?

I must say i am a fan of synthetic tack in general, even the early stuff, i 1st bought some to used it when breaking in, but found it so easy and comfortable we kept on with it, i used some for the kids ponies, saved me a fortune!
now i have some both for me to ride & for when small kiddies have a pony ride when they visit, from experience a small 'accident' is less bother to wash off a synthy - i found this out when i used to do RDA in the last century!

to be 100% honest i think unless you spend a fortune on leather tack the quality is inferior to what it used to be, i have had (leather) saddles 30 years old which were in better condition than a friends quite expensive new one was after only a couple of years,
mine were barnsby so not even the most expensive going back then.
(and we both know our stuff, she is a BHSII & i am a BHS stage 3 we have too many years on our clocks too)

synthetic saddles FROM A GOOD MAKER have the advantage that their trees are made from material which does not easily distort, cheap wooden & metal trees on leather but cheaper make saddles will distort
don't buy a crap synthy from an unknown maker, they often are syth top on crap wood/metal trees or a poor quality tree, or a poor design, often a copy of the colonial polo saddles taken out to 'the Empire' in Victorian times ( I kid you not!)

Some of the synthetic bridles are a bit iffy, they can be too small in some places and the edges can be rough, take a good look, both with your fingers as well as your eyes, i have a libbys bridle which is very soft but the buckles etc are not that strong looking and have begun to look tarnished, the advantage is i can easily replace them myself when i need to.

decathlon are pretty good in general, i like their rugs myself, but some of the saddles are a no-no, again the colonial polo saddle design, great if you want to sit like an old stubbs painting but out of date for modern riding, or the truly awful pony pad things they use here which also make kids sit hunched up with their ar*e stuck out behind and feet forward = yuk!
i would advise paying a bit more and ordering a wintex / maxam etc maybe easier to get one sent from the UK,
a good buy are the 2nd hand ones on Ebay, make sure they tell you the saddle is in good condition and you pay with paypal, once it arrives get someone to check it over, if you tell the seller this they know you would get a refund from paypal ( who almost always find in favour of a buyer) so it would be no gain to selling you a bad-un.
if you are not sure about size or if your horse may change shape the type which can be adjusted are available, i would not think them much good for serious work i.e cross country/hunting etc but for hacking they seem ok, i have never had a problem with any synthy of mine so far.

where are you? i ask as i have a selection of saddles ( not for sale!) which you could have a play with to see what suits & what size etc.

bye

I love my Thorowgood synthetic saddles that I bought 19 years ago! It's the light weight that attracted me. I must admit I prefer the look, smell and feel of leather but I put leather stirrup leathers and a leather girth on mine and I just cannot make that transition to synthetic bridles or headcollars.........definately a no-no for me!
