Saltie, a meat farm rescue Empty
PostSubject: Saltie, a meat farm rescue   Saltie, a meat farm rescue EmptyWed Feb 24, 2010 7:20 am

Saltie,
she was featured way back in 2007 on the now extinct equine section site, an old trotter mare (23y) of unknown history, probably pregnant, and looking very sad and droopy on her picture,
not surprising really that no-one chose her.

But something kept drawing me back, i kept telling myself NO she is old, she looks knackered, she wouldn't be at the meat farm unless there was a problem, don't do it No No No

but again and again i looked at her, once she went in to the urgent section i had to do it,
by this time ES had gone, a new bunch called Bank end had started and 1 of their members has seen Saltie and given her a brief once over.

i agreed to buy her, & i went over to pay, just as well i did as the next day a major row erupted between Bank end and the meat farm, if i had not already bought her i would have been refused.

we collected her and a few days later the vet checked her over, she was not pregnant, she was in good general health and passed as fit to ride, but her teeth were in a shocking state... she was unable to eat hay or feed,

my vet thinks her teeth were perhaps why she went for meat, in the last winter she would have lost weight rapidly, her old owners probably thought something big was wrong, so shipped her off. Crying or Very sad my vet spent over an hour doing her teeth.

35 euros worth later i had a healthy, well trained, beautifully mannered riding horse with a fantastic nature, not a shred of malice, willing and friendly. so what she was old, so am i!

my vet thinks she may have been a 1 owner hack all her life, her papers show no change of owner, no vaccination record (so no racing/shows etc) & no foaling.
so after 23y of faithful service she was sent to face a horrific death, how could they do it? No No Evil or Very Mad

Saltie has been a darling, we have had her over 2 years now, everyone loves her, she has been ridden by kids from 2y to a grandma of 75y, in the riding barn she is as quiet as a beach donkey, but once out the farm gate, she grows 2 inches, and loses 20 years, only then she is the race bred fizz bomb she was born to be.

& she provides a stabilizing influence on the mushroom boy colts, she also 'mothered' a shetland a friend rescued.

when she 1st came she used to stand for hours looking up the road, i think she was waiting for her ex-owner to show up, she used to go nuts when she heard a mans voice in the distance, till they got close enough for her to tell it was not the right man, how sad is that?

she had been with us 4-5 weeks she did as she was asked & accepted fuss but did not really respond, then she began to feel at home, now she screams a welcome to everyone - i don't need a door bell! she is the most affectionate of horses,

Saltie has had health problems, nothing due to her age or that she was a rescue, just pure bad luck, she has fought through, still retaining a good nature, she is now almost 26y & showing symptoms of cushings, so we will just have to battle on, out come the clippers!

just a foot note, my nick-name is SALEE given me by my Dad as a kid, in french with an accent salee means 'salted' as in salted nuts, so the fact the mare i bought is named SALTIE seems rather apt don't you agree? bye Saltie, a meat farm rescue 35522 Saltie, a meat farm rescue 35522

hi Saltie is a registered french trotter.

no i agree that minor details like worming, pasture rotation & teeth are like UFO's in france, everyone has heard of them but not all believe they exist! Shocked

talking with my vet it would seem gradually the mood is changing, but oh so slow!

rather like Monty Roberts theories, a lot of us knew there was 'something more' & did not agree with or use the old ways - but we did not know what was missing till shown, then we all wondered why we did not see it ourself?

i will try to put on some pics, before, mid way and after, but computers are not user friendly to ME!! Embarassed bye

an update,

Saltie saw the vet today, he is happy she is beating the jaw abcess ok, no need for more AB's just spray it with antiseptic. he is coming back to do a tooth rasp under local anesthetic.

her probable cushings is now considered a deffo cushings, she has all the signs & to do expensive tests would just tell the vet what he already knows.

the vet said for a horse of 26y (her B'day is tommorrow April 4) she looks well, but if you add in the fact she has cushings and has been sick in 1 way or another almost 18 months she looks blooming brilliant !! Thats good news on the abcess front salee. On the cushing's, exactly, why put her though more only to confirm what you already know, with my old boy, who I lost before christmas, after about 28 I decided he would not be messed with anymore, as long as he was comfortable. I failed him once and called the vet who insisted on "tubing" him for a colic when all he needed was an anti spas. [it was not long after we arrived in france, and he had the tube down when he had sent me to fetch something] my poor boy, I can still see the look in his eye, I really let him down that night Saltie, a meat farm rescue Icon_cry But he did get over it and he didn't have a vet to him for the rest of our 5 years together. In a couple of weeks saltie will have the sun on her back, and a belly full of grass.....enjoy Saltie, a meat farm rescue Icon_sunny

as i said above :-

her probable cushings is now considered a deffo cushings, she has all
the signs & to do expensive tests would just tell the vet what he
already knows.

she is not having tests for cushings, just that the vet & i will factor in the consequences of it to any future treatments she may have for other things, & the likelyhood of health problems it may cause or worsen, for example that she gets a riddiculously long coat, far too long to keep her skin clean, which then gets sore, so she will need clipping all year round.

i agree with you sometimes owners (or vets) put animals through treatments etc because the owner needs to 'do something' & feels helpless just letting things be or the owner can't let the animal go, & not because the animal wants to live on.

so far thank goodness i have not had to have a horse PTS, but i do know that in Salties case with her age it is a high probability that i will have to or at least deal with her death and probably not all that many more years hense, we thought it would come to it last year but she got through.

i have talked to my vet about procedures etc, i did not want to have to find out the hows and whatfores after the event when i will probably be in no state of mind to handle it. i don't do an ostritch impression well.

Sorry salee, you have misunderstood or, rather I havn't worded it terribly well. What I tried to say, was that I was concurring with what you said as in ,"I agree, why put her through more tests etc." Hope that clarify's it. It's always difficult in text Saltie, a meat farm rescue Icon_smile

'S ok.. easy done to write something you think sounds how you meant it and then it just does not read how you thought?

i think we should form a club....ROC = Rescued Oldies Carers, 'cos the oldies can still ROC-K Saltie, a meat farm rescue Icon_cheers Saltie, a meat farm rescue Icon_cheers Saltie, a meat farm rescue Icon_cheers

by the way, i used a synthetic western saddle on Saltie for our plod outs, i did some research and the western spreads the riders weight over a larger area than a traditional English saddle (of any type) so reducing the per inch pressure by up to 30%,

so for older backs it may be worth thinking about?

i got a synthetic 'cos they are 1) a heck of a lot cheaper & 2) a lot lighter than leather ones,
3) they are comfy for My old butt, 4) they got somewhere to hang a bag for my phone, water bottle and inhaler etc.

hi salee, sorry to hear about the new prob. its like she has some generalised infection that never goes away and keeps popping up again, like her immune system is'nt working enough to overcome the original infection, also if she was on antibiotics for months did the vet give her any flore process to help redress the balance of the gut flora, i heard somewhere that 60 per cent of immunity is in the intestines, i used a product non veterinaire on my horse after a long course of antibiotics to replace the good flora killed by the medicene its called edhya form, they deliver by post, when i need help i ring bristol or liverpool university equine departments, they are always very helpfull, after all they are the top specialists, maybe they could recommend , sorry can't spell no more, some antibiotics specifically to target your horses problem, i recently was told there was no treatment by one vet, called another and got antibiotics to target exactly the prob. now its ok, on the cushings front hilton herbs do natural products for that, i find herbalism and homeopathy good for longterm chronic conditions, no side effects etc. its called cush x its been clinically trialed, they also do a product for the gut post anti b's, i think we need to do the lottery to pay for it all!

hi salee, i thought it was possible to take some of the pus or scrapings and culture it so you know which bacteria, microbe or sort of organism you are dealing with, if your vet fobbs you off, find another who will do what you ask , correct diagnosis is critical, wthout it its like shooting in the dark, i had five different vets to a lameness problem the final vet came and she was sound in one week, after 7 months lameness, ii have learned to be ruthless and demand what i want done with vets and blacksmiths, i am by nature quite shy really, but its my money, its taught me not to back away, and oddly enough they have done what i asked without argument, i understand what you are going through, the stress, its like a dark cloud over your life, not to mention the cost while it all goes on and on, i'm sure it all be looking brighter soon.

our vet came out - prepared for the worst - he dug into her frog and sole and found a small slanted break, probably a tread or where she has just caught it on a stoney bit - really low in the join of heel and hoof, he dug along the track and released some yuk.

her swelling is right down, lots of gunk out now, hopefully this is just a simple case of bacteria entering and should heal ok.

the big problem is her age and cushings give her a rubbish imune system, 99% of healthy horses would have shrugged this off but she needs the heavy artillery out, shes on bute stuff, AB's, animalintex & soaks.

she got her teeth done, some are getting a bit loose but all are hanging on in there, now she is eating her hay like it last orders,

i have trimmed off the long leg hair, it's too difficult to check her with her furry leg warmers on & thats maybe how i missed the tiny injury?

i now dunk & scrub all her other feet (1 at a time of course! Saltie, a meat farm rescue Icon_lol) in the foot soak stuff after her sore foot so they are well cleaned out, she has towels out there to dry off her tootsies so we don't get cracked heels as a side order Saltie, a meat farm rescue Kopfschuettel

so i suppose you could say she really is being waited on hand and foot now? Saltie, a meat farm rescue Icon_razz Saltie, a meat farm rescue Icon_razz Saltie, a meat farm rescue Icon_razz
