PostSubject: Whats the weather like in Lower Normandy?   Fri Sep 30, 2011 1:43 pm

Hi all, following on from my other posting about good areas to ride, what is the weather like in Lower Normandy? Basically, we want to move in the next few years time but want to try another area (we're in central Brittany at the moment), we don't want to go south as too hot for us & want to be within reach of the ferry ports, we were thinking of heading to North Brittany but after a recent trip to Normandy I quite like it around there & you seem to have more horsey events than we do!

However, when watching the French weather forcasts, I notice that the Cherbourg peninsular gets hit quite often with rain, Brittany is also known for rain but where we are isn't too bad, enough rain to keep the fields green, not too hot & not much snow in the Winter (I don't mind more snow though!)!

Whats it really like with you? I know Lower Normandy is a large area, are there any areas known to be very rainy, or suffer from mizzle or lots of dark depressing days? We are planning to take a closer look at around the borders of 50/14/61, maybe venture into Swiss Normandy, although OH likes to be within 45 mins of the coast!

Hi Smile

At a guess it won't be much different in basse normandie , possibly a bit wetter at times , we have ' spring grass ' at the moment it seems after a wet spell during august Rolling Eyes [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] and now very warm summer temperatures in mid /south manche 50 ( probably everywhere is hot right now ? )

If you choose anywhere on a very large hill then you might be prone to catch the wet weather ( mizzle I like that discription )even more

Its quite easy to be nr the sea in dept 50 on the peninsular

Thanks for your reply Cally, I think mizzle is a Westcountry word, we used to get lots of it living up on the moors & it can be very depressing as it could last sometimes for weeks!! I wouldn't particularly like that again, I know the Monts D'Arree in Brittany get it quite a bit but they too are high moorland ground.

One Winter we visited relatives near Coutances & the ground was very wet, whereas at home it was fine (we live on a well draining hill!), hence my question re the rain in Normandy, plus watching the French weather forecasts! We would want to live in a hilly area as not keen on flat areas, also hills are great for the horses musculature & help keep me fit Laughing !

There does seem to be lots of "micro climates" in this region, I can count on one hand the days I've not been able to ride in say the last year:cheers: , I do live on a hill, if it's not looking particularly brill weather wise, we look at the sky , and box up and drive toward the blue bit!. our land is not particularly wet, don't think I'd want to live anywhere else. You are very welcome to visit, when you're over this way and I'll show you around the area.
