Worming advice.

I am going to worm my gang, but my friend today has told me she thinks my two new girlies are both in the family way can any one advise what sort of wormers I should use, just in case they are . I think they are both wormie belly's my self, carnt see anyone giving away pregnant mares. The other two mares in the field with them when we collected them were both 5 months preggy.
So just want to use the right stuff.

almost all wormers are ok for pregnant mares, just read the instructions in with them, but don't be skinny with the dose, if you can get a weight tape or other means to calculate the dose, but if it has to be an educated guess it is better to slightly over dose than under dose the makers say you have to give many many times the right dose to do any harm. at this time of year most use a general purpose wormer not a tape or bot wormer, unless a red worm or other problem is suspected, in which case take the vets advice as there are new products out all the time it seems - but if you think they have a wormy belly get a worm count done, might be a good idea anyway especially if you are not sure about their past history.

another possible cause of the wormy belly look if not worms or a foal is liver inflamation which can also be worm related, or other parasite or plant toxin, if they are not quite as bonny in general as you would think they should be for their diet etc consider getting this checked out if the worm count or foal is not found to be the cause of the teletubbie look.

as to no-one gives away preg mares, you wouldn't be the 1st to find your mare had a surprize brewing no-one expected (except her of course) i had a mare we did not suspect was pregnant because as far as we knew she had never been anywhere near a viable male........ till we found a stupid b*tch had been secretly sneaking back to the farm & putting her 2 y old entire out very late at night for a few hours in the belief he was too young to be a bother......she was wrong!
the 3 mares who all had foals can testify he was certainly old enough to bother, thankfully he was a nice full blood arab, so it could have been worse.
